Handling Hazardous Substances and Dangerous Goods

Course Objectives:

The aim of this course is to educate the participant in the many aspects of handling dangerous and hazardous materials that relate to their workplace. By the end of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • identify the legislation and regulations that relate to hazardous substances

  • understand and identify dangerous goods and hazardous substances from labels, placards MSDS and other information sources

  • identify hazards in the workplace relating to dangerous goods and hazardous substances

  • control hazards relating to dangerous goods and hazardous substances in the workplace

  • handle and store dangerous goods and hazardous substances safely

  • understand the importance of reporting, recording and corrective actions

This will be achieved by using a training plan incorporating these important topics:

  • Introduction

An overview of definitions, Legislation and Regulations.

  • Information Sources

MSDS and other information sources, SOP's, dangerous goods and HAZCHEM.

  • Handling Hazardous Substances

Hierarchy of Control, storage facilities and equipment, handling procedures, PPE and safety equipment, manual handling, dealing with hazardous waste.

  • Recording and Corrective Action

Workplace recording, incident reporting, corrective action, emergencies in the workplace.

General Information:

The course will be conducted in a relatively informal manner allowing for discussion of relevant handling and safety issues that are of interest to the participants. Participants will be provided with a set of indexed course notes (colour) and will be provided with an assessment Workbook. Participants are also requested to complete a Feedback form.

All participants attending the course will receive a Certificate of Attendance listing the topics covered.

All participants who complete the assessment Workbook from the course will be issued with a Certificate of Completion listing the topics covered and any documentation required for RPL purposes.
